We sat side by side in that cracked black booth
Lips pulled tight hid a chipped front tooth
But she knew early on that I didn't care
About a chipped front tooth or prematurely graying hair

But it felt different now cuz we both knew
That this life we had was almost through
She'd packed her things in an army sack
Left some faded tees and a well worn anorak

We never talked again and I never paid her back

It was fun for more than a little while
Seemed I knew every way to make her smile
But along the way we got side tracked
And things got as grim as a fatal heart attack

But then came the day when I first caught sight
Of that frozen stare

Facebook tells me that she’s alright

I guess there’s nothing left for me to unpack
In my head or that khaki cotton sack
